Ignorance of history prevails today, and nowhere more so than cable TV! I have just seen a fleeting image of Christopher Columbus, dressed in ostrich-feathered tricorn, flared and lavishly braided coat, knee breeches, white stockings and high-heeled buckled shoes. Oh, and with oodles of lace spilling from his huge decorated cuffs. He looked soooooo 1492, sailed the ocean blue and all that!
The picture above might almost have been him, except it’s the pirate Henry Morgan!
Yo, ho, ho, me hearties! Or however Columbus would have said it….!
This picture literally made me laugh out loud! Couldn’t agree more, the lack of knowledge about what is “historically accurate” period clothing is just sad (“The Tudors” from Showtime comes to mind…and all three of the Philippa Gregory TV series). There’s a blog written by a couple of costume designers called Frock Flicks that makes fun of all the bad period costumes on TV and in the movies…if you’re ever in need of a laugh, I highly recommend checking it out.
