Richard III, courtesy of Dundee University….

Dundee University - Richard III

This portrait of Richard, commissioned in 2015 by Dundee University, somehow escaped my notice at the time. At least, I really do not recall it, which is a shame, because it’s rather good

And to see a fuller version of the portrait, as well as more information, go here.

  1. I like the looks of this; it seems to correspond pretty well with the reconstruction from the skeleton.

But that raises the question: what was the basis for the earlier portraits, which generally represent Richard III as being a bit thinner faced?

  2. I wonder if the thinner-faced portraits date from later in his reign, when things had begun to go so badly wrong for him? By that I mean the loss of his wife and son. I imagine he would have pined considerably, and lost weight.
